ditArdo – the Stuttgart-based artist, founder and pioneer of ‘comic-cubism’ is convinced that comic-cubism will establish itself as a concept and a genre. If you want to follow this development, you’ve come to the right place.
Draw around a bit, think about Goethe and Newton and the relationship between freedom and patience.
And I remember a feeling I had when I was standing on the platform at a station waiting for a local train to take us from the station, which we reached by bus, to the town where our grammar school was.
Instead of the train I was expecting, a freight train came roaring through the station. I clearly remember the smell of iron and asbestos, and the wind that whipped up my long, thick hair. I also remember the shiver that ran down my spine at that moment – loneliness.
And yet yes, at that moment there was such a feeling of freedom.

A stay on Sylt in spring 2017. The AWI research station. The Wadden Sea. Dykes and salt marshes. An island rich in contrast in every respect.
The flat land in the north of Germany allows a wide view. But the landscape is never boring. Wind and weather give it a constantly changing face. The North Sea with its high and low tides also plays its part. Low tide and high tide in turn are a prerequisite for the formation of salt marshes. The salt marshes are often used as grazing areas for salt marsh sheep.
On Sylt, luxury brands meet pure nature. The island is not only rich in contrasts for the painter’s eye.
The first sketches for the painting “Das Duttenkragentier” (see article image) were quickly created, initially without the circle in the background. The painting developed over a fairly long period of time, culminating in this version from 2018.

The comic-cubist painting Liberty is a woman is an interpretation of the often quoted painting La Liberté guidant le peuple by Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix – We live in turbulent times. I have taken THE Liberty as my theme.
The idea for this painting developed during the process of painting The Demo. The painting Liberty was first published in the group exhibition Eos in Vittoria (see above). There is a catalog for the exhibition.

A mutation? A mythical creature or a neobiota? Alive or dead? Served on a cubist-looking tray.
This picture remains monocrome it is 30 x 30 cm … again a larger format is planned about 100 x 100 cm this will then be colored after the underpainting … possibly in variations, because somehow the composition inspires me on the one hand to earth tones but on the other hand also to a clear colorfulness. The composition itself will probably vary somewhat in the larger size, which will then emerge during painting.

The carnation is making slow progress … lots of details in the play of light, which I have to invent in this case… The lower row of teeth is now a little more in shadow and the upper row is slowly becoming more even, so it becomes a little more unreal and comic-like … The candle is slightly reflected in the abstracted surface of the book …
Next, the teeth are made more even and a little more three-dimensional and the abstracted cubist candle is painted a little more waxily, and the carnation is of course emphasized a little more (more clearly).
I didn’t paint an ember on the smoking wick, I had considered it, orange or red embers don’t work of course, but in white-grey tones it might have worked … I decided against it because it would then emphasize another focal point in the picture too strongly.

The discoverers of the New Economy. This picture was taken in 2004 on the terrace of Toto Sugiri in Indonesia. It describes the situation of a particular company in the New Economy at that time. Similarities with the protagonists of this company are deliberate and intentional.
Back then on the terrace in Toto’s garden, this picture caused a lot of hearty laughter and joy. A second version of this picture was created later. Both copies are in private art collections.

At the beginning of the 1990s, ‘ditArdo’ developed his characteristic artistic language of ‘comic cubism’. The term ‘comic cubism’ was then coined by Fred Feuerbach in 2004 in connection with ditArdo’s paintings in front of a wide audience.
The stylistic terms ‘comic’ and ‘cubism’ overlap in their formal approaches in ditArdo’s artistic language. The ‘comic’ is characterized by the means of line and surface, whereby the space is also defined by the surface. The striking effect is used together with synthetic ‘cubism’, the simultaneous and superimposed representation of different views or perspectives, to make high-contrast statements about the motif or experiences. The motif becomes a pictorial symbiosis of everyday experiences, dreams, lines, colors and structures. For example, the yellow tomcat stands for the image of laissez-faire, of roaming around in the midday sun. In the process of artistic observation, questions about the fourth dimension arise primarily in sunny Jakarta. What color are the streaks of light over the water, how much time is eight months, is time yellow, red or blue? These are just a few quotes from our lively email exchange in the ether.
