Firstly, because chickens and roosters were omnipresent in Indonesia, and secondly because the question arose as to what would have happened if the rooster had not crowed in the morning? Would the history and fate of Peter and Jesus have been different? According to tradition, the cock crowed three times and Peter slandered Jesus. DitArdo turned the rooster into a DJ, and the story rocks to his music.

Another protagonist: Judas. Coming into the picture from the left, with his mouth wide open, he points at the three-eyed Jesus. Judas does this facing backwards, his finger forming a strong contrast in the backlight of the sun.
    In vino veritas est.

Three eyes see more than two, the cock crows three times, holy is the Trinity, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
The painting was sold into an art collection at a wonderful exhibition at The Peak Bandung with introductory words by the very famous sculptor Nyoman Nuarta.

    30 years of comic cubism

To mark this occasion, the KAMADO B10 GERMANY manufactory is releasing this hand-painted Kamado Kubicom in collaboration with ditArdo the comic cubist

The Kamado KUBICOM is named after the Comic Cubism style developed by ditArdo, which ironically reflects the classical modernism of Georges Braque or Pablo Picasso and translates it into pop art-inspired comic strips.

The transfer to the three-dimensionality of a Kamado cites the totality of perspective that once made Cubism a revolutionary art form.

In conversation with the Stuttgart artist dietArdo, painting and sculpture – Marion Graeber in May 2021

Marion Graeber: “What does art mean to you?”
ditArdo: “First and foremost, I see myself as a painter. More precisely, as a draughtsman and painter with a tendency towards sculpture.
Painting is defined by the surface, drawing by the line and sculpture by the malleability of a material. Sculpture stands in contrast to the latter.

For me, art is the antithesis of the calculability of rationality and empirical science. The driving forces in art are intuition and creativity and the self-determination of the author or, if there are several, of the authors.

    Art is free.”

The comic-cubist painting Liberty is a woman is an interpretation of the often quoted painting La Liberté guidant le peuple by Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix – We live in turbulent times. I have taken THE Liberty as my theme.

The idea for this painting developed during the process of painting The Demo. The painting Liberty was first published in the group exhibition Eos in Vittoria (see above). There is a catalog for the exhibition.

    Carnation – Memento Mori

The carnation is making slow progress … lots of details in the play of light, which I have to invent in this case… The lower row of teeth is now a little more in shadow and the upper row is slowly becoming more even, so it becomes a little more unreal and comic-like … The candle is slightly reflected in the abstracted surface of the book …

Next, the teeth are made more even and a little more three-dimensional and the abstracted cubist candle is painted a little more waxily, and the carnation is of course emphasized a little more (more clearly).

I didn’t paint an ember on the smoking wick, I had considered it, orange or red embers don’t work of course, but in white-grey tones it might have worked … I decided against it because it would then emphasize another focal point in the picture too strongly.

The origin and development of comic cubism

At the beginning of the 1990s, ‘ditArdo’ developed his characteristic artistic language of ‘comic cubism’. The term ‘comic cubism’ was then coined by Fred Feuerbach in 2004 in connection with ditArdo’s paintings in front of a wide audience.

The stylistic terms ‘comic’ and ‘cubism’ overlap in their formal approaches in ditArdo’s artistic language. The ‘comic’ is characterized by the means of line and surface, whereby the space is also defined by the surface. The striking effect is used together with synthetic ‘cubism’, the simultaneous and superimposed representation of different views or perspectives, to make high-contrast statements about the motif or experiences. The motif becomes a pictorial symbiosis of everyday experiences, dreams, lines, colors and structures. For example, the yellow tomcat stands for the image of laissez-faire, of roaming around in the midday sun. In the process of artistic observation, questions about the fourth dimension arise primarily in sunny Jakarta. What color are the streaks of light over the water, how much time is eight months, is time yellow, red or blue?
These are just a few quotes from our lively email exchange in the ether.
